As a complete turbine noob, would there be any form of propulsion if the rotors turned without fuel being added to create a controlled explosion? Is the whole purpose of squeezing that much air into such a confined space simply to feed air to the fire? Is that why the options are always prop, jet or? a combination & never just a non-explosive turbine? Cheers.

A Tesla turbine is a quite unique technology. It was invented and patented by Nikola Tesla on the 21st October 1909 at the Untied States Patent Office from experiments done in England. The patent 1061206 was granted on the 6th May 1913. Although, it is thought that a Tesla first showed a 200 hp 16000 RPM version on the 10th of July 1906 (on Tesla's 50th birthday).

did you set the inlet axis normal to the face of the turbine for ease of building and reducing chances of leak? i imagine since the air has to do a 90deg turn you'd be experiencing unnecessary pressure at the inlet corner. i recognize the air is going to have to take another? sharp turn at the exit, but i suppose that's unavoidable. cool build btw.

I made one of these using Hard Disc Drive platters and used the drive motor as a generator. It spun so fast the motor sh@t itself, after 30 seconds. @DidierDeluxe they do not work very well in reverse, even telsa admitted this, efficiency is greatly reduced by using it as a pump. ie. it captures kinetic energy from fluids extremely well which can then be converted into electricity but won't produce near as much kinetic energy when? it is driven by a motor or other power source.

I like how you've embedded the turbine in plexaglass to contain and control air flow. I am curious just exactly how they generate electrical power from the turbines. There is a video here showing a prototype turbine on a stand that the guy was able to hold in his hands, slightly larger than a hobby engine used in RC jets. I Imagine they have electric starter/generators driven by reduction gearing directly from the main shaft like early turbojets, but none of these videos go into that deep technical? detail.

I'm really excited about this but not from a design point of view. The idea of a turbine generating electric power for the electric motors is inspired. We know turbine engines are very efficient at constant speeds. (Ref. Every plane you've ever been on.) This solves the problem of slow throttle response of the old GM turbine cars and sets out an idea of the future of car design that is wholly new and innovative. I think this is the best? approach I've seen it came from Jaguar. Much respect. Luv.

Turbines are thirsty, as? a rule, compared to piston engines, and expensive to build. They also have a lag in power delivery, a bit like turbo lag, that is a problem in a car. They do have good size and weight efficiency, which makes them attractive for aircraft. The response lag is not much of an issue for aircraft. This car used a set of ceramic heat recovery units that transferred heat from the exhaust to the incoming air. This hurt the size and weight, but added thermal efficiency.

@ADSLISKEWL? Yes they did but you have to remember back then they did not have Radial tires (SAVES FUEL) the cars back then were made of steel no plastic or composite materials like we have today. They did drive one from NY to LA I believe average like 50 MPH (Consider the roads back then) and it averaged I think it was about 17MPG. With today's better alloys and CNC machines we do do far better.

@CudaHemiTom hey......my father was vice president of chrysler canada at one point in his life he brought home this car.for a weekend..everybody crowded around? it started like something out of the JETSONS...we were in Detroit at the time and went thru the tunnel to Amherstburg ontario...we fueled with diesel.....but you could feed it anything like banana peels......anyways I was around 15 at the time and really liked the attention the car received...it never went anywhere

Damned Politics? That's all it was, Not really they were ahead of their time...Plus the car was a bit dangerous lots of power and the electronics wasn't caught up to keeping time with the turbo's timing hell they still had vacuum tubing differently needed a computer to run that car hahaha

I remember this car? well. The exhaust was so cool you could put your hand in it. Chrysler was really pushing this technology until the first OPEC oil embargo hit in '74 when the price of gas went up and gas mileage became all important. They simply couldn't get the mileage up to compete with piston engined cars. Also, the turbines were really expensive. They also had a turbine powered bus. It was so smooth and quiet, not like a piston engined bus. It's a shame they had to give up on it.

@clap5 lots of reasons...1, it was very sluggish take off,2, the heat generated by a turbine is immense and the cost of creating an engine bay that could withstand all the heat was very expensive and it wasnt practical.also the fuel milage on these thing is rediculously bad.the last thing i can think of is they put out a whole lot of heat out of the rear.youd have to stand at least? 20 feet away to not get burnt up.i was a tanker on the m1a2 tank and they have turbine so i am familiar with it

This car, the design and the engineering was a big threat to the economy. If this car took off and other? companies followed, more than half of the auto and oil industries would have lost much. The infrastructure to support this type of car would have put a lot of Americans out of work, and your local mechanic would have been most likely an aircraft engineer!

@clap5 During the 1980 Chrysler Government Bail Out (Government gauranteed Loans for? Chrysler with Banks) the technology was turned over to the Goverment. Chrysler agreed not to move forward with it. The Banks who loaned the money were nervous about the new technology. They did burn a lot of gas too. The plan was to use this engine in 1981 in chrysler new yorkers which were big luxury cars. It never happened.

@clap5 They did. All thru the 60's and 70's, Chrysler worked on this. There's much documentation. For 1981, Lee A, Iaccoca wanted to launch a Chrysler New Yorker that offered this Engine Design as an option. But, this was 1980 and the Government Bailed Out Chrysler but Gaurantteeing loans with Banks. Many of those Banks didn't feel comfortable with this new unproven technology. As part of the deal, all of the work was turned over to the Government (I? think to NASA) and locked away.

@JBofBrisbane One of the major reasons why the car might have misbehaved is that Chrysler flew around the same car all over the world within a few weeks as hundreds of magazine editors and reporters kept test driving it. Australia was the last or among the last places to get a look at it so it might have been pretty worn out by? then. I'm rather sure it was in better condition when it left Detroit.

That's what was one of the main ideas, not needing to use gasoline. Steve Lehto has written a great book on the car called "Chrysler's Turbine Car", check it out folks.

There's a company already building stuff like that commmercially, as seen in this video : /watch?v=5J5njCbTNb8 The alternative would be to put is vertically into the water, sorta like in this video at 1:52 , but into water instead of into air. In that case it's even easier to keep the? electronics away from water, since you have an axle you can just stick above the water. This is all old technology.

@Jesus45U since no one has answered your question that I saw, I am going to try.. I believe that you can use the fan? as a water Wheel, but you need to protect the windings in your motor and the bearings too, or else it could seize up and not work anymore.. Also water is very ward on motors, moisture, humidity.. I would be interested if you came up with anything on that.. If you do please share.. Good luck to you!!

@tomview1 not affected by turbulence, no need to face wind, no reduction gears needed if size is proper, tip speed will not exceed wind speed (needs no safety breaks) , low speed equals to low noise, can be? mounted on any rooftop, easy to DIY make it, or salvage, or just use off the shelf parts, less problematic to maintain, low speed equls less wear by friction, what else you want?
