By 1946, Owell had endured both worlds, but Orwell, a democratic socialist, was horrified when he saw what Stalin was doing in the USSR and Eastern Bloc. 1984 is a warning about the dangers of totalitarianism in general, both Fascist and Communist, merging elements from both world. You can talk shit about Iphones and Apple (I think its shit too) but this commercial is a piece of art (I am a student in Advertising) and if you didn't know this was inspired by the book entitled "1984" written by George Orwell, where everyone is manipulated and lead by one person? (sort of like in this ad) and that`s why they say "You'll see why 1984 won't be like "1984"" because they give you the power of knowledge and technology ( these being considered for that particular year )

Thought this a very good version but I seem to recall it being criticised at the time. I think? Brave New World is probably a more accurate version of how things will be. Rather than an obviously oppressive regime, people will be in more like an open prison, kept stupid with "entertainment" like TV game shows. A bit like now in fact.

The native american aztecs obtained rule through spreading fear and violence in central america and subjugating surrounding tribes to slavery for a elite noble class. I would like to point out that the positive point to this novel wasn't that it is difficult to break a human? down as the government was clearly willing to use resources to achieve this goal. So it didn't matter if it was easy or hard to break a person down as the result was always the same. The real positive point of the story was the fact that people subconsciously hated and resisted Big Brother as can be seen with Parsons. Who Winston believed to be the ideal citizen.

Yet another completely erroneous (deceitful?) critique of 1984. Orwell had already written about Communism in Animal Farm, and he was not going to repeat himself in 1984. He was not an over productive writer and seldom did he repeat himself, even in essays and letters. 1984 is about the Fabian Socialists (INGSOC)? in whom he saw "totalitarian ideas taking root". Stop deceiving the readers, either because you don't understand the book, or because its message is not ideologically convenient to you.

He basically spelled out that his Socialist vision could be corrupted into tyranny. Corruption came from people who desperately? wanted socialism, but were too eager to give their power to a government that promised to lead the revolution for them. As a socialist, he? was forced to leave by (supposedly allied) Soviet hostility. This made him a lifelong opponent of Stalinism. I remember The Serious Moonlight Tour. I hoped he would sing "1984". The timing was right. But I understand why he didn't. His voice would have been in shreds if he tried to project this time and again, across the continents, and make it sound right. Our disappointments meet up with reality sometimes. But Station To Station was hard enough to pull off repeatedly. And he chose wisely in order to excel at his gargantuan venue. Still, I wanted to be in the one place? in 1983 when he included "1984".

Boys Keep Swinging was inspired video, Ashes To Ashes is sublime! Jean? Genie was great, as in most things from the 70's, he looks divine. But The Hunger (he aged too soon), Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (best supporting actor in a John The Baptist beheading), Labyrinth (I know it has a juvenile following, but I've never allowed myself to see it), Absolute Beginners (great song, only fair movie), Cat People (great theme song) he should have starred in it. Serious Moonlight tour should've had 1984!

But it's his music from this era that we can't complain about. Apart from The Man Who Fell To Earth, his video judgement was sometimes off track. But the music, which is his main contribution, can't be faulted. I believe it's in the nature of video, stages, it must involve so many other influences. Choices were made.

Many people will jump at the chance to "correct" your facts, when you were really only concentrating on how the music is affecting you personally, which is far more interesting approach to comments than looking up information. Historical trivia has its place and is necessary. But I am much more fascinated by finding someone who gets a true emotional send? off and how I might be able to relate to that revelation. More the feel of a thing than the think of a thing. That especially applies to Bowie.
